Description
Name / Scientific name: Burmese Python (Python bivittatus)
Natural habitat: Native to Southeast Asia, Burmese pythons inhabit tropical forests, swamps, marshes, and grasslands. They are semi-aquatic and often found near water sources.
Recommended enclosure size and type: Due to their large adult size, Burmese pythons require a spacious PVC or wood enclosure—minimum 8×4 feet for adults, with larger enclosures preferred for full-grown individuals. Strong, secure construction is essential. Plastic tubs may be suitable for hatchlings and juveniles.
Heat gradient: Provide a basking spot of 90-92°F with a cooler side around 75-78°F. Maintain ambient temperatures in the low to mid-80s. Large enclosures may require multiple heat sources to maintain an even gradient.
Humidity requirements: Maintain moderate to high humidity around 60-70%. Use a large water dish and mist as needed, especially during shedding. Proper airflow is important to prevent respiratory issues.
Feeding on: Burmese pythons are carnivores and should be fed appropriately sized rodents or rabbits depending on their size. Feed hatchlings every 5-7 days, juveniles every 7-10 days, and adults every 2-4 weeks. Caution: These snakes grow large and strong—feeding and handling should only be done by experienced keepers.
