Description
Name / Scientific name: Saharan Sand Boa (Eryx muelleri)
Natural habitat: Native to the arid deserts of North Africa, Saharan sand boas are fossorial snakes that spend most of their time burrowed beneath the sand in hot, dry environments.
Recommended enclosure size and type: A PVC or wood enclosure measuring at least 2×1 feet is sufficient for adults. Plastic tubs also work well, especially for simple or rack setups. Use a loose, dry substrate like aspen or a sand/soil mix to allow natural burrowing behavior.
Heat gradient: Provide a warm side of 90-92°F with a cooler side around 75°F. Ambient temperatures should stay in the low to mid-80s. These snakes prefer belly heat from under-tank heating or radiant heat panels controlled with a thermostat.
Humidity requirements: Saharan sand boas require low humidity, ideally between 20-30%. Avoid misting; a small water dish is sufficient and should be cleaned regularly.
Feeding on: These boas feed on appropriately sized rodents. Juveniles should be fed every 5-7 days, and adults every 10-14 days. Most feed readily on frozen-thawed mice, though occasional live feeding may be necessary to start hatchlings.
