Description
Name / Scientific name: Merauke Blue Tongue Skink (Tiliqua gigas evanescens)
Natural habitat: Native to the tropical rainforests and wetlands of southern New Guinea and surrounding islands, Merauke blue tongue skinks thrive in humid, densely vegetated environments.
Recommended enclosure size and type: Adults require a PVC or wood enclosure of at least 4x2x2 feet, offering ample floor space and good ventilation. Provide hiding spots, leaf litter, and a loose substrate for burrowing. These skinks need more space and humidity than other blue tongue subspecies.
Heat gradient: Maintain a basking spot of 95-100°F with an ambient temperature in the low to mid-80s and a cooler side around 75°F. A UVB light source is strongly recommended to support healthy bone development.
Humidity requirements: Merauke blue tongue skinks need high humidity levels around 70-90%. Use a moisture-retaining substrate, mist daily, and provide a shallow water dish. Proper ventilation is key to prevent mold and respiratory issues.
Feeding on: These skinks are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet of high-quality protein (insects, eggs, lean meats) and plant matter (greens, vegetables, fruits). Juveniles should be fed daily; adults every 2-3 days. Calcium and multivitamin supplements should be provided regularly.
